14-year-old Andrew was living in a foster home when he met his CASA advocate, Rachel. Andrew’s mother had died years before and his father had no involvement with him. Andrew was depressed, unmotivated, had no goals for his future and had no consistent adult presence in his life. Rachel had successfully raised teenage boys, so she was able to get through to Andrew in ways that other adults could not. In their five years together, Rachel saw Andrew blossom from a confused, unmotivated 14-year-old boy into a superstar 19-year-old college student. Andrew attends a local California State University, works a part-time job, and mentors younger foster youth. With Rachel’s guidance he was recently able to purchase a used car!
